I’ve called myself an idiot many times, and now realize that I’ve been misguided, not because I didn’t do something stupid, but because I didn’t understand the true meaning of idiot.
In Greek and Latin, idiot means a “private person” one who considers their personal needs as paramount. In ancient Athens the word “idiot” was used derisively to someone who declined to participate in public life. In fact, Greek democracy’s central premise was that everyone participated as well as cared about the whole. You were an “idiotes” when your own needs superseded the collective best.
Well, we certainly live in an age filled with idiots. The my way or the highway nightly news groups with FOX ,the greatest idiot, to in lesser ways , MSNBC and CNN decry their viewpoint without a great deal of listening to and integrating the believes of the public. Like it or not, a nation is built upon a multitude of ideas, each one, with the exception of those demonstrating a distain for the whole, must be considered.
On the eve of 4th of July, when we celebrate our collective unity, let’s become savants not idiot savants and rejoice in diversity of ideas.
